"Food For The Planet" GRAND OPENING THIS SATURDAY!

It's VEGAN, and offers RAW & Soy-free options, and ALMOST EVERYTHING
ON THE MENU IS GLUTEN-FREE!!!

Ithaca's only VEGAN restaurant! Come to their grand opening!
Host: Ithaca Vegans
Type: Party - Dinner Party
Network: Global
Date: Saturday, August 8, 2009
Time: 5:00pm - 8:30pm
Location: Food for the Planet
City/Town: Ithaca, NY
*Note: the restaurant is already open for business now, this is simply a grand opening celebration*

Here are some customer reviews:
"One of my favorite things is the black bean, mango,
cilantro salad (that isn't exactly the name of it). They have a vegan cheesecake that is just out of this world. I highly recommend the cheesecake and everything else!!!" - Amie

"shira and i went last weekend and got the incredible crepe with soy
cream and the frittata with potato-kale hash. both were really,
really worth their $10 prices. seriously. it was delicious." - Ari Moore

The food is absolutely delicious. It's important that we all support
this restaurant.

It's open Thursday through Sunday nights from 5 - 8:30 (as long as you
order by 8:30 you're good, you can stay later) and it's open for BRUNCH
on Saturday and Sundays from 10 - 2.

Don't have time to eat out? *Call and order a take-out meal* or smoothies!

Don't forget to check out their *cheesecake* and *brownies*. A 14 year
old from the Bronx said this is the best cheesecake he's ever had, way
better than the "regular" kind. I agree.

The Lasagna is also unbelievably awesome, as is the black bean mango
salad. Every single item I've had there has been REALLY good.

So show your support, and give it a try. And check out the beautiful art show gracing the walls by local photographer, and VEGAN, Frank Muller. You can also see more of his work at www.pbase.com/veganphoto

It's at 704 W. Buffalo Street, right across from Greenstar (look for the
tall blue roof) in the same building with the hearing aide center (next
to Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

Opening Date Changed!

The opening goal of July 18th is pushed back to July 25th. Some technical difficulties with repairs and installations have made the Health Department permit currently unavailable. Everything should be set once those items are taken care of.
Hope to see you then! And I am looking at August 8th for the 'Grand Opening', will post closer to the date.

Funding Has Been Approved!

Got the most important call today! Funding was approved by Alternatives Federal Credit Union, and for $2,000 more than requested!

Today was spent painting and enjoying the company of my friend John, and catching up on 10 years or so. With his help the top 3/4 of the dining area is painted, and tomorrow is reserved for the bottom half and trim.

My mother had a great suggestion for the lighting- to paste colored tissue paper on the stained beyond repair frosted glass. I tried the technique and it looks amazing!!!

Photos to come soon!

Plenty to do!

Getting ready for the targeted opening date of July 18th. Still plenty to do!

We have been scrubbing, painting, and laying the floor. Thank you Jim, Mom, Dad, Viola, Katherine, and Stephen for helping this week!

Goals, set them!

The goal is to open for a trial run on Sat, July 18th. I do realize that is Grassroots weekend, and that will surely effect business. This will be like a 'primer' opening, so I feel like that it is a good idea. That way any problems can be discovered, and the opening ceremonies will be held on the following weekend.
No loan yet, but I have purchased many items already, and am making steady progress. Tuesday I will demand an answer or else give up on funding through the city. It is a better deal than a bank loan, but they are very slow to respond! Very, very slow. Can't take it much longer!
On that note, I feel the nesting urge, and feel metaphorically pregnant with a restaurant. I guess that makes the loan officers midwives! I have the urge to do as much as possible now, since I will be so busy with a life changing and very consuming new role. Does this qualify as my first planned pregnancy? (note: I am only metaphorically pregnant!)
Painting WILL happen this week, and i will post some photos then
Thanks so much for all of the continued support, what a wonderful place to live!

Lighting

This evening I disassembled some broken light fixtures, saving the un-broken. They were in groups of three, still dirty (cleaning them will have to wait for another day), but salvageable. I like them and also the fact that they are salvaged, and I especially like the fact that they were free! Thank you Suzy! Just a little work, some glass fragments in the hands and I have some nice lighting. Good thing, the fluorescent rectangles presently in the space are not dining area appropriate!
Paint is bought and in the car, ready to warm up the white walls. Just have to reserve some time and baby sitting. Hopefully this week.

Monday, May 25, 2009

On Sunday, May 24th, Irja (mom), Ron (dad), Jim, and myself (me), did our first installment of de-greasing the space. Although the landlord had done an excellent job (I hear it was a greasy place before), there is still work to be done to make it 'vegan'!

Mom scrubbed the sinks, dad swept the floors, Jim swept and did some renovation planning, and I tackled the 10 burner. There was plenty of gross food stuffs coated in old grease under the burners. Three hours and I'm not quite done yet. We had Strawberry Chammomile Iced Tea and organic coffee to keep us going.

We did lots of brainstorming, and the most exciting idea was from my mother- to put potted herbs all along the window sills! There is a nice space around the building, where we will put some tables along the inlet too. They will be our tables, but might be take-out only. This is in case it is not allowed in the insurance/codes, they would be 'employee break tables' and customers just happen to sit there with their take out. I don't want to have to put up fencing, blocking the view of the inlet, and do not know the codes. I will be looking into those shortly.

Painting will happen shortly, and the laying of the floor! Plus more cleaning!
